Born in Porto de Mós, graduated in economics. He was deputy to the Regional Assembly of Madeira and to the Assembly of the Republic, Secretary of State for Internal Administration and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Minister of National Defence, Minister of State and Foreign Affairs.
He was chairman of the general and supervisory board of EDP, and non-executive chairman of the board of directors of BANIF and Banco Cabo-Verdiano de Negócios. He was visiting professor at the University of Georgetown, and visiting professor at the Paris School of Foreign Affairs Sciences Po e do Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas
He is an international consultant. Chairs the faculty council of Nova Business School. Curator of Fundação Oriente and member of the European Council on Foreign Relations. He received the Grand Cross of the Order of Christ and several decorations from foreign governments.
In July 2023, Luís Amado assumes the position of Non-Executive Director of Grupo BEL S.A.
